As is the case with the drivers, Twitter has been embraced by many of the V8 Supercar teams and I’m pleased to say that more than half of pit lane have an account.
The first two teams that deserve a mention are the Holden Racing Team (@holden_racing) and Bundaberg Red Racing Team (@BundyRedRacing) who are currently leading the paddock in terms of harnessing Twitter’s power. These two teams are the most active on the site, posting pictures, videos and pit garage insights on race weekends. They also provide updates on how their cars are going throughout practice, qualifying and the race as well as streaming live videos from the track (two especially appealing offerings given races aren’t broadcast live on television). These teams also reply to tweets from fans. Garry Rogers Motorsport (@GRMotorsport) is another team that replies to fan tweets. They also provide updates on how their cars are going throughout practice, qualifying and the race as well as sharing the occasional photo. Kelly Racing (@kelly_racing) is another team that uses Twitter to provide updates on the performance of their cars throughout the race as well as posting links to articles on the Team. Unlike the teams mentioned previously they generally don’t respond to fan tweets. Team Vodafone (@TeamVodafone888), Jim Beam Racing (@JimBeamRacing) and Stone Brothers Racing (@stonebrothers) also generally don’t respond to fans on Twitter. These teams have their Twitter feeds linked to their respective Facebook pages. Through this link they share news, race results for their drivers and workshop insights outside of race weekends. Trading Post Racing (@tradingpostv8) and Team BOC (@teamboc), two of the Brad Jones Racing cars post trackside and workshop updates, sponsor appearance details and the occasional photo. Wilson Security Racing (@wsracing) and Rock Energy Racing (@rockenergydrink) provide updates on the race results of their respective V8 Supercar drivers. Ford Performance Racing (@FPR_Australia) use Twitter intermittently, giving fans updates on the qualifying and finishing positions of their drivers. It may be a case of a forgotten password when it comes to Supercheap Auto Racing (@scautoracing) given they haven’t tweeted since last year. I’ve setup a list of the V8 Supercar teams for those who are interested in following all their tweets in one place: http://twitter.com/awhisper/v8-supercar-teams Before closing this final column on V8 Supercars and Twitter it seems apt to mention that the inaugural V8 Supercars tweetup is being organised for the Bathurst 1000 (tweet @racrcraig for the details). Tweetups have already been held successfully at tracks across the US for fans of a number of different motorsport categories, but their appeal has yet to spread. This may change as the use of Twitter by the V8 Supercars teams, drivers and fans grows, something which is great for us and the sport.
